How to Monochrome with a Sequin Blazer.

Grey Monochrome with a Sequin Blazer!

Monochrome has been an on trend last year and seems to have continued into this year as well! I have had a few attempts at it. And found out a few tricks that have been extremely useful when styling a monochromatic look, which I will share with you below.

3 Tips on how to style a monochromatic outfit:

Tip 1) Color Choice:

  • Pick a color that you have a lot of and know that you look good in! Remember the goal is to wear the same color head to toe, so picking a color that your closet is bursting with makes the whole process so much easier! Choosing a color that compliments your skin tone, and hair is a must. You don't want a whole outfit to clash! Try to think of the monochromatic look as a single color tone on a spectrum. You want to stay in one spectrum. So if you start with forest green pants, you want to imagine the color on a paint palette. Then adding a little white to the palette, the result being a slightly lighter green. However, in styling your outfit you would veer away from wearing a lime green top with forest green pants, as that would be more like adding yellow to the mix, leaving behind the color tone that your using.
  • Note: Pick a color other than black. Now I know at lot of you just froze and are questioning why I said not to do a Monochromatic black outfit. To be truthful there is nothing wrong with the all black look, honestly it was a staple of my high school and college wardrobe. Many of us fall back into our safety zone of all black because its easy. Casual Saturdays with black jeans, a black sweater and boots, is quick and easy. I would like to push you curvy divas to try something a little out of your comfort zone!

Tip 2) Pick a Statement Piece:

  • Is it a skirt with lots of flow, or a long over coat, or a matching pant suite?  What ever you choose let the item speak for it's self. Don't add excessive details or big statement jewelry. Remember the goal is to allow the color choice to be your statement. You don't the eye to get caught up with a shiny necklace and miss the main event! For example my monochrome color was grey while my statement piece is the Sequin Boy Friend Blazer from Elvi. It brings just enough shine and and attention that jewelry was not needed, shades of course excluded! Try a shimmery shirt or an interesting pair pf pants.

Tip 3) TEXTURE is Everything!

  • Mix and match textures to draw interest to your outfit. If you whole outfit is cotton then the eye will loose interest quickly. Adding texture keeps the outfit from being one dimensional. I, of course, choose a sequin blazer which adds an interesting texture over the more common cotton grey dress that I'm wearing underneath. Try a different texture as a layer, maybe a red pleather jacket or a chunk wool-knit sweater for an eye catcher.
  • Note: this rule does not apply if your doing an all blue jean outfit, those look good no matter what! I would simply advise mixing up the shade of blue, use light and medium, or medium and dark together.
